  • The Clear Disadvantages of Cork Flooring

If you are looking to renovate a home or just replace the flooring in your home, there are a lot of choices to consider. Should you go with the hardwood floors that will last a lifetime or choose carpet that provides warmth and comfort. There are other ideas such as tile and an even newer alternative with cork flooring.

I am sure you can find positives and negatives with all, but I am here to discuss some of the disadvantages of cork flooring. You will here all about how it is a green alternative that comes from trees that can be renewed extremely fast, but does that make it good for your home? The clear disadvantages of cork flooring lie in how soft the wood is that makes it so easily renewed.

Because the wood is so soft it is prone to scratching and dents that can damage the wood permanently. If you place it in a dining room, chairs will ruin the finish completely. You will not find this problem with other popular hardwoods such as oak, pine, or birch. These are great alternatives that can provide a lot more beauty than cork because of the multitude of colors you will find in the grains.

Cork is essentially one color that will not give you much variety. Other disadvantages of cork flooring deal with how often it has to be sealed. It is not a great choice for areas that could get any moisture. Hardwoods can provide more resistance to water than the soft wood of cork.

Tiling such as marble or slate would be a better choice in those areas such as bathrooms or kitchens. You can clearly get more bang for your buck with other choices. If I were to choose between carpet or cork flooring, I would definitely prefer carpet. With the clear disadvantages of cork flooring, I would focus my attention on what would work better. The obvious choice would be the hardwoods.

Hardwoods will last a lifetime with only minimal maintenance. Carpets cannot match the durability you will find with hardwood flooring. If you are afraid of feeling too cold in the winter time, you could always use rugs and throws to warm up the room. This can enhance the look, as well as provide needed warmth during the cold winter months. There are numerous choices to make and you should make a decision based on what works for you.
